History

How it all began…

Darra Tyres started out in the late 1960′s and was set up to service QCL (Queensland Cement & Lime) by its then owners.

Since then Darra Tyres has changed hands many times but it’s current owners Kevin and Annette Wood have been most successful in getting the business to where it is today.

Our longest serving employee Rodney Backwell started with the company 28 years ago when his brother Owen owned the business. Rodney recalls the early days when the front office didn’t even have a telephone, just a two way radio.

Back when Rodney and his brother Owen were running the place, the business mainly focused on front end work and passenger car tyres, and was called Darra Brake and Steering.

It wasn’t until Wayne and Kerry Randall purchased the business 24 years ago that it began to focus more on working with industrial tyres, agricultural and commercial tyres. Wayne Randall had worked with All Tread where he had developed his knowledge of the industrial tyre industry. Wayne brought with him to the business another Wayne, in Wayne Richards, who was known as the best service fitter in the industry, also from All Tread.

His superior service fitting skills have been passed down throughout the years and have been instilled in the workers we have here today.

It wasn’t long after that when Kevin and Annette Wood entered the business in partnership with Wayne and Kerry Randall. Kevin entered the business with a wealth of knowledge in the automotive industry and they hit the ground running.

Eventually Wayne and Kerry handed the business over to Kevin and Annette who are still heavily involved in the business today. In early 2010, Kevin and Annette began the process of systemising the business and they bought on their eldest son, Brett to help out with the process.

The business has now expanded to cater for all types of vehicles. Anything from the family sedan, 4×4, truck and light truck to agricultural and mining vehicles. We stock all the major tyre brands and have access to national suppliers in the local area, so we can get the right tyre for you and your vehicle.

Kevin Wood – Managing Director

Kevin has been at the forefront of the tyre industry for over 20 years. Kevin’s speciality is in industrial and commercial tyres including the management and upkeep of fleets.

Kevin has worked with vehicles his whole career from painting, mechanical, suspension and panel beating he has also spent time in the Australia Army as a driver. He has driven all size of vehicles throughout his career so understands the demands placed on drivers.

 

 

 

 

Annette Wood – Director

Annette runs the finances of the business. She has earnt her reputation as ‘The Rottweiler’ due to her persistence in chasing late payments.
Kevin and Annette have 3 adult kids, Brett, Daniel and Dean.
 

 

 

 

 

 

Susan Scott – Office Manager

Sue has worked in finance for over 22 years in a variety of different industries. Sue has recently updated her finance and business knowledge by completing a Certificate III in Business. Sue oversees the day-to-day financial aspects of the business and we are very lucky to have her in the office.
 

 

 

 

 

 

Rodney Backwell – Workshop Manager

Rodney is the longest serving team member and has worked at Darra Tyres since his brother first started the business. He has a wealth of knowledge of tyres and supports Sue by managing the workload in the workshop.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Nathan Pepper – Service Fitter

Nathan has been working with us at Darra for almost 10 years. He is a very experienced and trusted employee. Nathan’s role involves being out on the road attending to service calls. Nathan works on some of the bigger machinery we handle and will gladly help you in any situation.
