Tyre Pressure
“Anything but the correct pressure and either your safety or your wallet is at risk. Take your pick”
Having the correct tyre pressure is absolutely essential to extend the life of your tyres, promote safety and fuel efficiency. The pressure of your tyres is normally measured in Psi or Pound Per Square Inch or BAR.
It is vital that you regularly check the tyre pressure of your vehicle. Tyre pressures should be checked every 2 weeks for passenger car tyres, machinery and trucks may need much more frequent checks depending on usage and internal company practises.
Many people feel that a tyre will hold the pressure in indefinitely but for those of us that have left a bike sit for months on end you’ll realise that air does escape from any tyre. In fact around two pounds escapes every month from a standard tyre, hence the importance of topping up.
But how do I know the correct amount of inflation for my tyres?
Every vehicle no matter how big or small will have tyre placard fitted (see below). Typically the vehicles tyre placard will be located in the glove box, on the inside of the fuel door or under the bonnet of the car. The tyre placard contains all the information on tyre pressure and load rating levels for the tyres fitted to the car. If however different tyres are fitted then a different level of inflation may be required.
It’s also important to have your tyres pumped up appropriately as any level of under-inflation may make your tyres work harder and therefore build up heat, likewise, any level of over-inflation may result in poor handling.
Avoid unnecessary costs and keep your family and fleet safe on the road…
