When Tyres Need Changing
So when am I supposed to know when my tyres need changing?
First of all you will notice a lack of performance in your car and increased lack of control in poor driving conditions. The vehicle will take longer to stop and corner badly.
Tyre wear is something that happens over time and is a gradual process thus making it difficult to know the exact moment when your tyres are no longer at the legal tread depth or the life of your tyres is over.
It is the drivers responsibility to make sure that all aspects of the vehicle are legal for the road, especially the condition of the vehicles tyres. To avoid receiving any unwanted fines or unroadworthy notices for your vehicles, the tyres should be checked regularly by the driver.
So whats the best way to check your tyres?
In Australia the legal tyre tread depth is 1.6mm. All tyres have tread depth indicators which are little rubber blocks that have been moulded in-between the tread at regular intervals. These little blocks are set at a height of 1.6mm. So, when these become flush with the rest of your tyres tread, the tyre must be replaced ASAP.
once your tyres reach that 1.6mm tread depth it can be extremely dangerous to continue driving under this limit and is also illegal, you will be fined and your car can be deemed unroadworthy by the police.
Don’t wait until it’s too lateā¦
It is best if you replace your tyres around the 2mm tread depth mark, this will prevent any fines or unroadworthy notices and make for safer driving for you and others on the road.
However, it is not only the amount of tread wear that causes a tyre to be unsafe or unroadworthy. If a tyre is over 5 years old it will have lost its original oils that are in the rubber and can have cracks in the sidewall. It is important to check the spare tyre of your car every few months to make sure that is road legal in case of emergency.
You can find out the date the tyre was produced by finding the 4 numbers on the sidewall that make up its production date. For example: 2209 means that the tyre was created in the 22nd week of 2009.
