Passenger, Truck and Light Truck Tyre Tread Patterns

To determine which tyre tread pattern is right for your vehicle it will all depend on the type of vehicle and the application of the vehicle.
Below we can see the three most common tyre tread patterns for passenger vehicles, trucks and light trucks.

Symmetric Tread Pattern

The Symmetrical tread pattern is exactly as its name suggests, symmetrical. This tread pattern is the most common tread pattern that you will find. This pattern will have continuous tread blocks or patterns across the entire tyre and both inboard and outboard halves will have the same pattern.

Asymmetrical Tread Pattern

The Asymmetric tread pattern shown here shows the pattern changing from one side to another. Larger and stiffer tread blocks on the outside are designed to handle cornering better, while the inner tread blocks are smaller and are designed to shift water and improve grip in wet conditions. You will also find that the middle of the tyre has a continuous rib which helps straight line stability.

Directional Tread Pattern

Both symmetric and asymmetric tyres can be fitted either way around on the car whereas the directional tyre must be fitted the right way to benefit from the directional tread arrangement on the tyre. You will see with the directional tread pattern that the tread seems to form the pattern of an arrow and is designed to work in a specific direction, this creates a better dispersion of water and results in superior handling in the wet and a greater cornering ability.
