Is it a new Tyre Dealers on Station Avenue? No Darra Tyres has had a facelift!

You may have notice when driving down industrial Station Avenue in Darra that the brightest workshop on the strip is in fact ours. The deep blue and bright red combination catching your eye as you drive past our tyre dealers. We have ditched the old faded turquoise and lighter reds of the old workshop as we have recently undergone a rebranding, but don’t worry the same service and knowledge still remains.

So what comes with the changing of a brand identity…

We can tell you one thing that we are very proud of that didn’t change, and that’s our approach to you, our customers. Sure we might not look like the old Darra Tyrepower or Darra Tyre Service, but we still hold the same values and respect for all of our customers just now it’s under the name Darra Tyres.

Director and part owner Brett Alegre-Wood decided it was time for a face lift for the iconic Darra workshop and that’s exactly what happened. A newly painted and re-branded workshop still holds over 100 years combined experience amongst some of the most experienced tyre fitters in the country.

As we have grown over the years we have expanded into almost every area that tyres are involved. So no matter what the vehicle size, nothing is too big a job for us at Darra Tyres.

Best Tyres – Rolling back the links between Physics and Tyre performance

Hey guys,

Newton’s First Law of Motion states that ‘every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless acted upon by an external force’.

When we consider this law in relation to tyres, this external force is seen in the rolling resistance of the tyre, and it is primarily caused by the repeated deformation and recovery of the tyre as it comes into contact with the road surface. By deformation we mean the tendency for the tyre to go flat as the weight of the load flattens it against the road and by recovery we mean as it reforms into its normal circular structure.

Reducing rolling resistance is, in theory anyway, relatively simple – yet achieving a reduction in rolling resistance without compromising on other essential tyre performance is another matter.

You can achieve a reduction in rolling reduction by simply inflating your tyres more, they means they will roll easier. Great you say but Newtons Second law is ‘for every action their is an equal and opposite reaction’ and in this case things are fine until you turn a corner and your grip fails. So we need to find a happy medium… Well we don’t… The manufacturers already have.

Each tyre has an ideal PSi or Pounds of pressure per square inch and its written on the tyre wall. This is the pressure you should be inflating to and checking the inflation is at regularly.

0 Quality Tyres – Does US Senator Tom Harkin owe the Retreading Industry an Apology?

Hey guys,

We’ve no doubt that US senator was just being ignorant rather than trying to tarnish a whole industry, but his comments have the potential to tarnish the reputation of retreaders throughout Australia. Not that we expect any Aussie to be interested in US Democratic party speeches.

During the speech at the Iowa Democratic Party’s state convention on June 12, he referred to a Republican candidate as a ‘retread’ – an insult that has gained a some measure of popularity in the US.

He continued by saying “the problem with retreading is that they have a tendency to blow out and cause a lot of wrecks.”

Whilst the analogy may seem amusing it is actually quite far from the truth. The technology that goes into retreads today make the a viable option in many cases.

As with any decision that relates to tyres for your fleet you should be speaking to an expert who can tell you about the viability of each option.

It’s true, retreads used in the wrong situation have the potential to “blow out and cause a lot of wrecks” used correctly they can be an effective way of cutting costs.

0 The Best Tyres – Do you Know Where does Rubber come from?

Hey guys,

During a recent trip to Thailand I took time out to visit a local latex (rubber) plantation. Most people don’t realise that rubber comes from the sap of trees, it’s called latex and is a natural product. Now sure by the time we fit it to your car its far from natural, in fact well over 200 different chemicals go into the making of a tyre. As the underlying component the best latex produces the best tyres.

Natural latex is actually pure white, a far cry from the black tyres we all see.

The locals wake early every morning as they have done for generations and strip a little bit of bark from the tree, too much and you’ll have a sick tree, too little and its hardly worth the effort, they strip it in a diagonal fashion and place a cup underneath to catch the sappy substance. Eventually the tree repairs itself and you can start in a fresh spot the next day.

Once the cup is full they will take it away and add a chemical that helps store and transport the rubber.

It’s only a small amount from each tree, perhaps the same amount as when you put milk in your coffee. Obviously it takes hundreds and thousands of trees each day but the Thai’s who live in these areas think its a great lifesytle.

0 Tyre Centre Tips – The problem with Locking Wheel Nuts…

Hey guys, some tips from the experts from our tyre centre,

Many vehicles these days have locking nuts or security bolts. This locking wheel nut serves to protect the tyre and wheel from being stolen but it will also hamper our efforts to replace a wheel or tyre if you do not have the appropriate adapter that goes with the wheel.

It’s quite easy to tell if your vehicle has a locking wheel nut, look at the wheel nuts and normally one of the will be different, they will be round on the outside and have a design with the locking adapter fits into on the inside.

Please make sure you have this locking nut in your possession when we arrive to fit your tyres. This adapter is normally located in your glove box or the tool box in the boot of the vehicle.

If you cannot find this locking nut you may have to contact the manufacturer directly to receive one.
